A History of Motability
Motability was born in 1977 and, for the first time, disabled people could afford a good
quality car, from any participating manufacturer, fully insured, serviced and with breakdown
assistance. Motability was set up as a charity so it could also raise funds and make grants, in
order to provide customers with a complete mobility package even if there allowance would
not cover the type of car and adaptions that they needed.
Who can use the Motability Scheme?
The Scheme is open to anyone who receives one of the following benefits, and has at least 12
months’ award length remaining when they apply:
Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance or War Pensioners’
Mobility Supplement
If you receive the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance or War
Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement, getting a new car is easier and more affordable than ever.
Through Motability, you simply turn part or all of your allowance into the car of your choice.
No waiting lists, no credit checks or no medical assessments are required.
You do not need to drive but can nominate up to two friends or relatives as drivers instead.
Parents and carers can also apply on behalf of a child.
How the scheme works
The most popular option, chosen by over 90% of Motability customers, is the contract hire of
a new car. Customers enjoy affordable, convenient, trouble-free motoring; choosing a brand
new car every three years with insurance, servicing, tyres and breakdown cover all included.
The complete contract hire package now includes:
